Phottix reassure customers Odin for Nikon is on its way

Fear not – say Phottix’s marketeers – the Phottix Odin Wireless TTL Trigger is definitely coming, but they want the production model to be bug-free to save the need for repeated firmware updates.

A teaser image (above) showing the Phottix i-TTL transmitter on the new Nikon D800 suggests that when the system is eventually released, it will be compatible with the latest Nikon DSLRs.

Where to buy

The Phottix Odin for Canon has already been out for many months now. The recommended retail price is US$350 for a transmitter-receiver set. You can order it direct from Phottix, on eBay or from a local distributor. Customers in Great Britain and Northern Ireland cannot buy from the Phottix Store and should instead try their nearest Phottix UK resellers. Retail price here is around £330.

When released, the Phottix Odin for Nikon is expected to have the same price and availability.

looks like it will have a focus assist light on it…… i hope they update the canon version with this feature!

To be honest, I think your “Focus assist light” is actually the thumb grip for the battery cover.

No, the thumb grip for the battery cover is the thumb grip for the battery cover. The focus assist light is behind the raised panel on the top of the unit. The prototype of the Odin for Canon had a focus assist light which was unfortunately abandoned in the production units due to manufacturing problems. When I spoke with the CEO of Phottix at a recent trade fair he told me that they had been working on a solution to the manufacturing problems hence my hope that along with a nikon compatible version we will see an update to the canon version featuring a focus assist light…..

Can anyone confirm if this is true? I’ve been interested in this for my Nikon set up, but a focus assist light would be ideal to have.

Looking at the product shots of the release model, there is no AF-assist light in the Nikon version either.

I wonder if they can sort out the problem with working with light meters. That would be the only thing that might keep me away from the system. Cheap, reliable, power controllable flashes from Phottix themselves would be a big bonus.

I really don’t understand the pricing of these units. To get a transmitter and 2 receivers we’re expected to part with almost £500.

Way cheaper then three 600ex’s. The thing I like about this sytem, besides the obvious is the working distance. Although Canon’s improved distance with the 600′s is 100′ I can shoot at least three times that distance with the Odins. Which comes in handy in for some wedding receptions.
