Elinchrom have developed a speedring adapter allowing their Rotalux line of softboxes to be mounted on light heads from other manufacturers.
The Elinchrom Rotalux range comprises 11 different shapes and sizes of light modifiers that can be assembled quickly and rotated 360°. Highly regarded in the community, some users have even performed DIY conversions, voiding their warranties, to fit Rotalux softboxes on to flashes from Bowens and other makes.
Now, DIY solutions are no longer necessary, as Elinchrom have made available adapters for Bowens S, Profoto, Broncolor, Hensel, Balcar (Paul C. Buff/Alien Bees), Comet and Photona.
While Elinchrom are one of the world’s leading manufacturers, by far the most commonly used accessory bayonet on the market is the Bowens S mount. By providing a speedring for S-fit lights, Rotalux softboxes are now accessible to a much wider community of photographers.
Note that, for safety reasons, there are limits to the wattage of modelling lamps you should use with certain softboxes. For more details on compatibility, check this list. To find out more about the speedrings and Rotalux line-up, visit Elinchrom’s product page.
Where to buy
The new adapter rings cost anywhere from £36 to £72, depending on the retailer. Elinchrom products are carried by their authorised distributors.
For other kinds of modifiers, third-party Bowens to Elinchrom adapters are sold online for around US$30.
