Ikan has announced a new range of LED panels using edge-lighting technology. The Piatto series come in a number of different shapes and sizes and promise to generate a smooth, even output.
Unlike traditional LED panels, which consist of a matrix of diodes creating lots of little shadows, edge-lit LEDs have a line of diodes around the border facing inwards, the light then diffused and reflected forwards to create one contiguous light source.
“I never would have guessed that the Piatto’s would work this well while designing them,†said Barry Garcia, Ikan product manager. “The finished lights exceeded all of my expectations and have created a greater response and reaction than any other light I have ever released.â€
The Piatto lights come in round and rectangular shapes and various sizes:
- Piatto PL60 – round with 6-inch diameter
- Piatto PL90 – round with 9-inch diameter
- Piatto PL74 – rectangular 7 by 4 inches
- Piatto PL103 – rectangular 10 by 3 inches
Each one is about an inch thick and offers a high colour rendering index (CRI) of 95, with 5600K daylight-balanced output. They are dimmable and accept Canon, Panasonic or Sony lithium camera batteries.
The Ikan Piatto series are available to buy now from B&H Photo and Adorama, with prices ranging from $249 for the PL74Â to $379 for the PL90. For more information and a list of international dealers, visit the Ikan Corp web site.
