Phase One has unveiled its XF digital backs, integrated with the Profoto Air flash triggering system. The Phase One XF IQ3 medium format camera backs are available in 50-, 60- and 80-megapixel variants and have the option of eye-level or waist-level viewfinders. The built-in Profoto Air trigger means you can sync the cameras with Profoto lights without any extra radio accessories.

Phase One XF IQ3 80MPWhat’s more, Profoto seems keen to point out, some Phase One lenses have leaf shutters (as opposed to focal-plane shutters), which have high X-sync speeds of 1/1600 second, versus 1/250 second for most DSLRs for mere mortals. Thus you will be able to use Profoto flashes at this speed, effectively out of the box.

This is mainly a feature of the camera rather than the flash, though you do need a trigger quick enough. A long time ago we tested some cheap triggers and entry-level DSLRs that managed 1/1250 second, which is just as well: a starter Phase One XF kit will set you back a good €32,000!
