Flaghead Photographic, Quantum Instruments’ UK distributor, has announced the introduction of the Omicron 3 hybrid ring flash and video light. The circular LED lamp is a continuous lighting solution for stills and video with dimmer control and the option for automatic adjustment of light levels. The unit can also act as a flash for stills cameras when connected by the included sync cord.
The company promote the product as “compact, lightweight and easy to use” with a “chromatically correct” LED array, marketing the system at people producing “fusion videos” where stills and motion pictures are captured at the same time.
To mount the ring light on your camera, you need a £99 bracket (not included), a tripod or you can mount it to a video rail system with a £75 adapter. The Omicron is not a self-contained unit, as you need an external Quantum Turbo battery to power it. For the flash feature to take advantage of through-the-lens (TTL) metering you need yet another accessory, the Quantum CoPilot.
