SMDV teases B120 strobe: future AD100 rival?

Korean manufacturer SMDV has released teasers of an upcoming flash unit called the B120.

SMDV B120

Earlier this month,  SMDV teased some images of their upcoming new flash, named the B120. Besides the model number and the statement that it would be released this year, not much is known yet about this product.

Generally speaking, SMDV strobes with a ‘B’ model name (such as the B360 and B500) are battery-powered, and the number indicates the approximate energy rating in joules. Thus we expect the SMDV B120 to be a battery-powered 120J flash, possibly competing directly with the Godox Witstro AD100Pro.

From product images, the design of the B120 also bears a resemblance, in compact size, to the AD100Pro.

Though other manufacturers, such as Profoto and Godox, have been known to tease their upcoming products on social media, SMDV is a smaller brand, so it’s not clear whether the same strategy will work for them.

It will be interesting to see how the new SMDV B120 fares, especially if it plans to bring more competition to Godox (which personally I would be happy to see). Whether the B120 makes a big splash in the market or not, we shall have to wait and see.
