US-based lighting company FJ Westcott has announced a new specialized reflector designed for portrait photography. The Westcott Eyelighter is a relatively small, curved reflector that sits under your subject’s chin and helps open up the shadows in your top-lit headshots.
The accessory is well-suited for so-called “clamshell” or “butterfly” lighting setups, and thanks to its concave aluminium frame will not get in the way of your camera lens during shooting, while creating natural-looking catchlights (reflections) in the eyes of your model. It measures 147.3 * 84 * 60 cm and weighs three kilograms.
People who need such a bit of kit probably know who they are and can justify the investment, while hobbyists may be put off by its $299.90 price tag (or a slightly ludicrous £330 in the UK). The Eyelighter is available to pre-order from Adorama, B&H Photo, Wex Photographic and regional Westcott dealers, with release set for 5th June 2014.
What do you think? Can you see yourself adding one to your studio?
