Basic settings / menu options

[↔] Wireless Button

The zig-zag arrow button on the left is the wireless button. Use it to cycle through the five different wireless operating modes, including non-wireless, radio master, radio slave and two optical slave options. Treat it like a “main menu button”.

  1. [iTTL]
    • non-wireless mode
    • access traditional on-camera modes here using the (MODE) button, including
      • [M] manual power control
      • [RPT] stroboscopic (multi-flash) mode
      • [iTTL] automatic power control
  2. [2.4G RF]
    • radio master/commander mode
    • Shows a list, [M], [A], [B], [C], which corresponds to the master and three remote groups.
  3. [M] Slave S1
    • optical slave with pre-flash ignore (for use with TTL flashes)
    • manual power mode
  4. [M] Slave S2
    • optical slave with instant triggering, for use with studio flashes
    • manual power mode
  5. [iTTL] 2.4G RF Slave
    • radio slave mode

Note: the (MODE) button will not function until you have selected either

  • [iTTL] to cycle through non-wireless modes, or
  • [↔] to adjust display options

Function keys

Underneath the screen there are four multi-purpose buttons whose function depends on context and operating mode. They are

the far left button; sometimes labelled on-screen as “Zm/C.Fn”
F2
the second button from the left; sometimes labelled “SEL”
F3
the third button from the left; sometimes “+/-”
F4
the far right button; sometimes “CH” or “return”

2.4 GHz RF Master mode

Use the [↔] wireless button to navigate to the master/commander control screen. This is the screen comprising a list of four groups, [M], [A], [B], [C].

Use the SEL button (F2) or the dial and (SEL/SET) button to select a group. + [M] is the master unit (i.e. the current flash unit) + [A], [B], [C] are remote off-camera flash groups.

Remote flash power setup

  • With a group selected, use the (MODE) button to change that group’s operating mode. Choose from:
    • [TTL] automatic power mode
    • [M] manual power control mode
    • [–] disable this group (i.e. do not flash)
  • With a group selected, use the +/- button (F3) and the dial to adjust power.
    • In [TTL] mode, this tweaks flash exposure compensation, from -3.0EV to +3.0EV in 1/3EV increments.
    • In [M] mode, this adjusts the flash output from full (1/1) power to 1/128 of full power.

Remote zoom control setup

  • With a group selected, use the Zm/C.Fn button (F1). Do a short press to access the zoom function menu.

Note: Sometimes you will select the Custom Function (C.Fn) screen by accident. Press the Return button (F4) to return to the main menu and try again.

Zoom menu

  • Press the Zm/C.Fn button (F1) to adjust the master flash’s manual zoom setting
  • Press the Gr.Zm button (F3) to adjust the zoom for each wireless group, which will open another new screen.
    • Press the Gr. button (F1) to select a group of remotely-controlled flashes (A, B or C). Use the (SEL/SET) button and dial to choose the zoom setting
      • [A] automatic zoom setting
      • [M] manual zoom setting: one of 20, 24, 28, 35, 50, 70, 85, 105, 135 or 200mm
  • Press the Return button (F4) to return to the main menu.

2.4 GHz RF Slave mode

Note: Sometimes you will select the Custom Function (C.Fn) screen by accident. Press the Return button (F4) to return to the main menu and try again.

The current TTL exposure compensation is displayed in this screen, but it cannot be adjusted from the slave flash. Instead you should adjust it from your master/commander flash.

Optical Slave mode

There are two optical slave modes. S1 corresponds to a pre-flash-ignore mode, suitable for using with TTL flashes. S2 is a simple (“dumb”) optical slave that triggers on the first flash detected; suitable for using with studio flashes or manual speedlights.

Both optical slave modes support manual power control only.

Manual, TTL and RPT (non-wireless) modes

[iTTL] automatic power mode

  • Short-press the Zm/C.Fn button (F1) to access the zoom control menu. Then use the main control dial to select a zoom setting.
    • [A] automatic zoom setting
    • [M] manual zoom setting: one of 20, 24, 28, 35, 50, 70, 85, 105, 135 or 200mm

  • Press the +/- button (F2) to adjust the flash exposure compensation. Use the main control dial to increase or decrease the power level. The compensation can be set from -3.0EV to +3.0EV in 1/3-stop increments.

[M] manual power mode

  • Short-press the Zm/C.Fn button (F1) to access the zoom control menu. Then use the main control dial to select a zoom setting.
    • [A] automatic zoom setting
    • [M] manual zoom setting: one of 20, 24, 28, 35, 50, 70, 85, 105, 135 or 200mm

  • Press the +/- button (F2) to adjust the manual flash power setting. Use the main control dial to increase or decrease the power level. The brightness can be set from full (1/1) power to 1/128 of full power.

[RPT] stroboscopic mode

  • Short-press the Zm/C.Fn button (F1) to access the zoom control menu. Then use the main control dial to select a zoom setting.
    • [A] automatic zoom setting
    • [M] manual zoom setting: one of 20, 24, 28, 35, 50, 70, 85, 105, 135 or 200mm

Note: Sometimes you will select the Custom Function (C.Fn) screen by accident. Press the Return button (F4) to return to the main menu and try again.

  • Press the +/- button (F2) to adjust the manual flash power setting. Use the main control dial to increase or decrease the power level. The brightness can be set from 1/8 power to 1/128 of full power.
  • Press the TIMES button (F3) to adjust the number of flashes that occur. Use the main control dial to increase or decrease the number of flashes, from 1 to 30 times.
  • Press the HZ button (F4) to adjust the frequency of flashes in Hertz (flashes per second). Use the main control dial to increase or decrease the rate, from 1 to 100 Hz.
