There is a new LED lamp from Yongnuo that does a little bit of everything. The YN-140 is bi-colour, meaning you can continuously adjust the colour temperature between tungsten and daylight. It’s also a hybrid lamp that’s a continuous video light one moment and a flashgun the next.
This 140-diode array is designed for portability with its “ultra-thin design” running on lithium video camera batteries or standard AAs. Using the control panel on the rear of the device it is possible to adjust the Kelvin temperature from 3200K to 6000K at the touch of a button.
The YN-140 can sit on a tripod, tabletop or in your camera hotshoe thanks to the included mounting accessories. While it will work as a “stable”, flicker-free light for continuous video capture, you can also plug it into a flash trigger or your camera’s PC port and it will provide an extra-bright pulse in synchronisation with your camera, just like a speedlight.
HSS? Sure, just leave it in continuous mode. TTL? Not yet, but it’s still early days. In time, the LED takeover of the lighting industry will be complete! Muahahaha…
Yongnuo products are sold from their official online store and include a 12 month warranty. The YN-140 costs just US$48 shipped from China, making it around 25% cheaper than the Aputure Amaran 198C and the most affordable bi-colour LED array we’ve seen to date.
Another interesting hybrid flash/continuous LED from Yongnuo is the YN-0906II, which activates on a shutter half-press and so can act as an autofocus-assist lamp for your DSLR.
